Update: our planning and research so far!

So, just an update on how we're doing with our planning and research for our music video so far.

Research-wise, we are pretty much there. We have a list of all of the research blogs that we aim to produce by next week and I'm confident that we are almost 100% finished with our research. I only have a few more blogs to complete, whilst keeping a steady flow of blogs updating our progress etc. I still need to analyse some previous students music videos, just to take some ideas and identify their visual style. This will help with our music video because we can also take some ideas for different technologies that we can use in our video such as green screen, split screen etc.

Today, we began our initial storyboard. We've decided that our full storyboard is going to be done with photographs so that when we put it on our blog it'll be much easier to decipher the places of the actors etc. We also felt that it would be much easier on the eyes rather than just a few stickmen! We want to keep our drawn storyboard for when we film because it will help us to see our initial ideas on that shot and also we understand it much better because they are our awful drawings!! We've made our storyboard as detailed as possible, putting in second markers where we can (e.g. 0.22, is 22 seconds in) and doing it by lyrics. So we have been putting beats of 1,2,3,4 onto the shots that are cut to the beat just to remind ourselves how long each shot is and when we cut to the next shot. We're including every shot and angle so that we know exactly what we want to do. However, we are aware that when filming there is room for artistic freedom, so some of the shots may change. But we felt that we should have our initial ideas completely set in stone before filming, just so we can be really sure of every shot we are doing when filming.

We still need to begin our shot lists (which are my speciality!). I will start our shot list when we have finished our initial storyboard and begun work on our photo storyboard. This will help to distinguish each shot from the next and is always helpful in working out which shots to film in which order in which location. This will begin very soon as we want to get our filming started as soon as possible.

Also next week we plan to sit down and have a discussion about who we want to play our actors, what we want the actors to wear, aspects of mise-en-scene that we ccan incorporate, the locations of our video and the deadlines for each aspect. For example, we have been set a deadline for all of our filming and we want to set mini deadlines for having the locations and the shots all planned out and then filmed. We want to make our filming process as efficient as possible.

All in all I think our research and planning is going very well. We have met all deadlines so far and we are keeping up to speed with our blogs, doing at least 2 a week. That's all of our ideas and musings about our music video research and planning so far!

More planning and research to follow :)
